Romona Ortega

Ramona Miranda Ortega is the Director of the Human Rights Project in New York City. She is a native of California and long-time Chicana activist and human rights defender. In 2000 she organized a NYC shadow report under the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) and was a delegate to the U.S. hearings. As the director of the HRP she was a founding member and key organizer for the New York City Human Rights Initiative, a campaign to implement ICERD and CEDAW through innovative local legislation in NYC. She is a human rights trainer in the area of human rights documentation and human rights advocacy and has presented her work at numerous human rights panels and international conferences. She is a current board member of the U.S. Human Rights Network and is also sits on the board of the New York City Aids Housing Network. Before coming to the Human Rights Project she was a researcher at MDRC and research consultant with the Kellogg Foundation’s N.Y. State Scholar Practitioner team and freelance journalist for CBS and LAWEEKLY.
